Meet With Your Member of Congress During the August Recess
The FAA shutdown, which Congress allowed to last over two weeks, had a tremendous impact on the airport and airway trust fund (AATF). Even though the immediate crisis has been resolved, the FAA has only been extended through September 16th.
With legislators back at home this month attending town halls and listening to constituents, we have an opportunity to make certain that they understand the importance of a strong AATF and the positive impact that your airport has on the local economy. We need to make sure all Members of Congress understand the very important role airports play in our nation’s economy and national aviation system.
Be sure to refer to our toolkit for pointers on making the most of your meeting with elected officials, especially at town halls, this August. In addition to our general travel and tourism talking points, we have included below some additional points for you to discuss with your legislator regarding the FAA. We’ve also listed some of the town hall meetings that are taking place across the nation in the coming weeks. If your legislator is not listed, simply call his/her office to inquire about upcoming events.
FAA TALKING POINTS:
- During the FAA shutdown, the airports and airway trust fund lost almost $300 million, cutting further into the dangerously low $800 million uncommitted balance.
- Under the FAA shutdown, airports around the country suffered because much needed Airport Improvement Program (AIP) funding could not administered by the FAA.
- Explain the impacts at your airport, especially on construction projects and the number of both airport and construction staff that were impacted by the FAA shutdown.
- Point out the economic impact your airport has on your local community.
